Cemil Meriç was born in 1916 in the Hatay region of southeastern Turkey, a region riven by political and cultural turmoil. His family emigrated from Greece after the Ottoman defeat in the Balkan Wars. After World War I, the region came under French Mandatory rule. After brief independence in 1938, the Hatay region was annexed by Turkey in 1939. Meriç’s family history, personal experiences, and studies in the French education system contributed to his anticolonial worldview, search for universal rationality and creation of a unique, subversive language that combined Persian and Arabic with Turkish…

“Babel,” the first chapter of Cemil Meriç’s Bu Ülke, is translated here to English for the first time. Meriç, a Turkish intellectual, inspired many scholars and leaders in post-Kemalist Turkey. “Babel” is a critical discussion of Kemalist intellectuals’ cultural and political outlook and the cultural reforms they instated. Meriç refuses to accept the divisions between East and West, religious and secular, and Right and Left which he sees as straitjackets imported from Christian Europe that prevent freedom of thought. At the same time, his writing integrates a philosophy inspired by the West with one that originates in the East and creates a symbiosis between them. He challenges the premises of the Turkish modernization project and the attempt to create a new generation, new state, new language and new culture. Writing in a subversive language, Meriç contends that a reformist project disconnected from its past is doomed to a lack of substance and failure.

“בבל”, הפרק הראשון מתוך ספרו של ג’מיל מריץ’ (Cemil Meriç) Bu Ülke, “הארץ הזאת”, מתורגם כאן לראשונה לאנגלית. מריץ’, אינטלקטואל תורכי בן זמננו, שימש השראה לחוקרים ולמנהיגים רבים מהאליטה החדשה בתורכיה הפוסט-כמאליסטית. “בבל” הוא דיון ביקורתי בראייה התרבותית והפוליטית של האינטלקטואלים הכמאליסטים וברפורמות התרבותיות שחוללו. מריץ’ מסרב לקבל את החלוקות בין מזרח ומערב, דתי וחילוני, ימין ושמאל, שכן הוא רואה בהן כבלים שיובאו מאירופה הנוצרית ומונעים חופש מחשבה. בה בעת הוא שובר את הדיכוטומיה בין מזרח למערב באמצעות שילוב הפילוסופיה ברוח המערב עם פילוסופיה שמקורה במזרח וסידורן מחדש באופן היוצר ביניהן סימביוזה. הוא קורא תיגר על הנחות היסוד של מפעל המודרניזציה התורכי שנועד ליצור דור חדש, מדינה חדשה, שפה חדשה ותרבות חדשה. בשפתו החתרנית טוען מריץ’ כי מפעל רפורמיסטי המנותק מן העבר הוא חסר תוכן ולפיכך נידון מראש לכישלון.

“Babil,” Cemil Meriç’in Bu Ülke’sinin birinci bölümü ilk kez burada İngilizceye çevrildi. Bir Türk aydını olan Meriç, Kemalizm sonrası Türkiye’sinde birçok bilim adamı ve lidere ilham kaynağı olmuştur. “Babil” Kemalist aydınların kültürel ve politik görüşlerinin ve kendi kurdukları kültürel reformların eleştirel tartışmasıdır. Meriç Doğu-Batı, dindar-laik ve Sağ-Sol gibi ayrımları düşünce özgürlüğünü engelleyen, Hıristiyan Avrupa’dan ithal edilmiş deli gömlekleri olarak değerlendirip, bu ayrımları reddeder.  Aynı zamanda,  yazıları Batıdan esinlenen Doğu kaynaklı bir felsefe içererek bu ikiliği birleştirir. Türk modernizasyon projesine ve onun yeni bir nesil, yeni devlet, yeni dil ve yeni kültür yaratma iddiasına meydan okur. Baltalayıcı bir üslupla yazarak Meriç, geçmişinden kopartılmış bir devrim projesinin asılsız ve başarısızlığa mahkûm olduğunu iddia eder.
